Who We Are

Newmarket Open Door is a charity dedicated to transforming the lives of young adults through meaningful housing support. Our story began in 1997 with a simple vision, and a £5 donation, when a small group of passionate individuals came together, united by the belief that young people facing homelessness deserve more than just a place to stay. From these humble beginnings, our charity has grown into a community-driven organisation committed to helping young people build brighter, independent futures.

In 1999, with support from local partners and Forest Heath District Council, we opened Portland House, our first supported accommodation project. This marked the start of our mission to offer more than temporary shelter. We provide stability, guidance, and the opportunities young adults aged 18–24 need to thrive. Many of those we support have experienced difficult or unstable backgrounds, and we are here to offer a lasting foundation for change.

Our charity superstore plays a vital role in funding this work. By generating essential income for our housing projects, it allows us to deliver life-changing support, develop new services, and respond to the evolving needs of our community.

At the heart of Newmarket Open Door is a dedicated and compassionate team. We walk alongside each young person, helping them build practical life skills, grow in confidence, and rediscover their potential. Whether they are learning how to manage a home, pursuing education or employment, or simply gaining the self-belief to take their next steps, we provide the tools and encouragement they need to succeed.

Since 2006, we have been honoured to have Terry Waite CBE as our President and Patron, offering his support and belief in our mission. Over the years, we have continued to evolve, from managing the Newmarket Recycling Centre to saving the SOS Bus to launching community initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic, always guided by the same principle: meeting need with action, and challenge with hope.

Today, Newmarket Open Door stands as a testament to what community, compassion, and belief in people can achieve. Our work is about more than housing, it’s about opening doors, creating opportunities, and helping every young person we support move towards a future filled with possibility.
