Portland, Cranworth & Windsor House
Supported Accommodation in the Heart of Newmarket!
Our supported accommodation offers a welcoming and comfortable environment right on Newmarket High Street, just a short stroll from the town centre. Residents can enjoy easy access to shops, cafés, restaurants, and local museums, as well as excellent public transport links. Regular bus routes connect to Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge, and the nearby train station provides convenient travel to London and beyond.
The accommodation is made up of three characterful terraced houses, Portland House, Cranworth House, and Windsor House, located at 184, 186, and 188 High Street. Across the three properties, we offer nineteen comfortable bed-sitting rooms in a range of sizes, with shared showers and toilets.
Residents have access to two fully equipped shared kitchens, each with cookers, microwaves, fridge-freezers, and laundry facilities, helping to encourage independent living in a supportive community setting.
Cranworth House (No. 186) also houses the Newmarket Open Door office and includes overnight accommodation for on-site staff, ensuring help and support are available when needed.
Who Can Apply and How?
Newmarket Open Door provides supported accommodation for young people aged 18 to 24 who need a safe and supportive place to live.
We give priority to local applicants from Newmarket, Forest Heath, and East Cambridgeshire District Council areas. However, our accommodation is not exclusive to these locations, so if you’re from outside these areas, please get in touch to discuss your suitability.
You can apply directly to us, or a referral can be made on your behalf by Social Services, Housing Support, the Job Centre, Probation Services, or the NHS.
Once we’ve received your application, we’ll arrange an interview with our Service Manager to assess suitability. During this meeting, we’ll take into account:
Your past experiences
Your need for support
Your current housing situation (if any)
Your future aspirations
Successful applicants are then prioritised based on need, with care taken to maintain a balanced and peaceful community within our accommodation.
Getting in touch is easy, whether you’re referring yourself or someone else, just give us a call and we’ll guide you through the next steps.

Our dedicated team of Support Workers work closely with residents to achieve personal goals and access additional help through our partner agencies. Together, we can assist with:
Job searches and career advice
Access to further education and training opportunities
Finding work experience placements
Information on local courses and skill-building programmes
Managing money, budgeting, and debt advice
Developing independent life skills
Support with court appearances
Taking part in social and community activities
Applications for move-on accommodation
Thanks to the generosity of local supermarkets and community donations, we run a Foodbank that supplies our residents with weekly deliveries of basic food and beverages. These are brought directly to our supported accommodation each week and include essentials such as tea, coffee, squash, potatoes, bread, eggs, and a variety of tinned goods.
Each room is fully furnished, and we can also assist with bedding, clothing, toiletries, and essential household electrical items, helping residents feel at home from the start.
At Newmarket Open Door, we believe everyone deserves a safe home, the chance to grow, and the right support to move forward in life.
